Like a Fairy Tale
The LIKE Series, inspired by the allegories of fairy-tale protagonists and my previous painting series of 29 inner children, reflects upon the shared landscape of our collective childhood. The diverse faces of the inner self encountered in my earlier work now expand into a deeper, more universal emotional narrative within this new series.
Humans enter this world as absolute innocents, inherent believers in a state of perfect grace and care. Yet, much like Adam and Eve’s banishment from Eden, we inevitably face an exile from that untainted era of life. Through the painful awakenings of loss and disillusionment, we confront reality; nonetheless, a fragment of the self stubbornly continues to dream of an idealized world. True psychological growth begins when we proactively heal the wounded inner child and consciously shed the identity of the victim.
In childhood, many girls find solace in playing with dolls—objects that serve as both a projection of the self and an intimate companion. Most dolls, much like the rigid ideals constructed by society, are permanently adorned in beautiful garments, wearing perpetual smiles. To me, however, this unyielding smile felt profoundly uncanny and unsettling. It stood as a silent manifestation of the societal expectation that pressures women to always appear graceful, pleasing, and flawless.
By deliberately painting these dolls without their prescribed smiles, I seek to resist and dismantle these imposed behavioral doctrines. This series is an act of emotional liberation—a reclamation of the autonomy to choose one’s own feelings and a return to that dreamlike, unfiltered innocence we once inhabited before our displacement from Eden.

동화처럼 (Like a Fairy Tale)
LIKE 시리즈는 동화 속 주인공들의 이야기와 앞서 작업했던 '29명의 내면아이 그림 시리즈'에서 영감을 받아 우리 모두가 한때 공유했던 어린 시절의 기억을 비추는 작업입니다. 전작에서 마주했던 다양한 내면의 얼굴들은 이번 연작을 통해 더욱 깊고 보편적인 정서적 서사로 확장됩니다.
인간은 누구나 완벽한 보호를 믿으며 가장 순수한 존재로 태어납니다. 그러나 아담과 이브가 에덴동산에서 추방당했듯이, 우리 역시 나이가 들며 그 순수의 시간에서 밀려나게 됩니다. 상실과 배신이라는 현실을 자각하는 과정에서 우리는 깨어나지만, 자아의 어느 한 구석은 여전히 이상적인 세계를 꿈꾸곤 합니다. 진정한 성장은 상처받은 내면아이를 스스로 돌보고, 더 이상 자신을 피해자의 틀에 가두지 않을 때 비로소 시작됩니다.
어린 시절, 수많은 소녀들이 인형을 가지고 놀았습니다. 인형은 아이들에게 자신을 투영하는 거울이자 유일한 친구가 되어 줍니다. 사회가 요구하는 수많은 이상향처럼, 대부분의 인형은 언제나 화려한 옷을 입고 완벽한 미소를 짓고 있습니다. 하지만 저는 그 영원한 미소에서 기묘한 이질감과 불편함을 느꼈습니다. 그것은 여성에게 늘 우아하고, 타인을 기쁘게 하며, 결점 하나 없어야 한다고 강요하는 사회적 명령이자 시선과 닮아 있었기 때문입니다.
의도적으로 웃지 않는 인형의 형상을 캔버스에 담아내며, 저는 우리에게 부과된 이러한 관습적인 규칙에 저항하고자 합니다. LIKE 시리즈는 온전한 감정의 선택권을 스스로 되찾으려는 해방의 몸짓이며, 에덴에서 추방당하기 전 우리가 누렸던 순수한 본연의 모습을 회복해 가는 과정입니다.
